INTRODUCTION
One nice thing about powerlifting is if you have access to weights you really don’t need much equipment to get started. We do recommend a few items for your gym bag to help ensure you’re getting the most out of your time in the gym.
These items will help you get the most out of your lifts and minimize unnecessary injuries caused by inadequate gear.
This article provides recommendations for essential equipment for each of the “big three” lifts—squat, bench press, and deadlift—and offers advice on selecting a gym bag to keep all your gear organized.
SQUAT
SQUAT SHOES
Look for shoes with a non-compressible sole and elevated heel. This design helps increase stability and improves posture during the squat by allowing for a deeper squat with proper alignment. Popular options include the Adidas Powerlift series and Nike Romaleos.
If there is anything on this list I would rank as “Most Important” this would be it. Walking or running shoes have soft soles and aren’t designed for the types of weight you lift when squatting and will compress unevenly making the lift feel unsteady, they also have a tendency to roll your ankle when placed under excess load significantly increasing your chance of injury. You’d actually be better off squatting barefoot than using improper shoes.
Of course walking around a gym barefoot comes with its own hazards. Do yourself a favor and grab some decent lifting shoes.
We recommend
KNEE WRAPS / SLEEVES
These add warmth and compression, aiding in knee stability and reducing the risk of injuries. Sleeves made from neoprene are another option and provide good support and flexibility.
The Iron Bull Knee Sleeves are highly recommended for their durability and comfort.
Some lifters prefer wraps because you can usually get them tighter around the knee or add pressure to problem areas. Personally I use the GymReapers Knee Wraps and have had good luck with them.

WEIGHTLIFTING BELT
A sturdy belt can support your lower back and help maintain intra-abdominal pressure during heavy lifts. A belt should never be used as a crutch for poor form but as you get stronger and lift heavier weights you’ll find the time comes where you’ll need a good sturdy belt to start pushing the big boy weights.
A leather belt should be ridged and gives your torso something to push against and isn’t intended as support for your spine. When used correctly it helps stabilize your whole core.
Thicknesses range from 5mm, 7mm, 10mm, and 13mm. Most lifters will find a 7-10mm thick belt works best.
Belts come with several adjustment methods including traditional hole/prongs or lever buckle. Many lifters like the duel prong style belts but adjustable lever buckle style belts offer more adjustability options.

BENCH PRESS
WRIST WRAPS
Similar to knee wraps these provide wrist support and stability, particularly useful during heavy bench presses to help keep the weight stable (especially important when lifting over your head) and preventing strain and injuries.
Look for wraps that are stiff yet comfortable, allowing for a tight wrap without cutting off circulation. Titan and Stoic are known for their high-quality wraps.
We Recommend
BENCH SHIRT
For competitive lifters, a bench shirt can be an invaluable piece of equipment. It is designed to support the shoulder and maintain better form while lifting heavier weights.
A bench shirt is typically for advanced lifters and changes your training significantly. Training in a bench shirt requires practice, as it alters the natural movement pattern.
Typically a bench shirt needs to be custom fitted to your body type and bench style. Therefor we don’t have a recommendation for an off the shelf bench shirt to buy.
While bench shirts get a lot of attention online I generally don’t recommend them except for very advanced lifters who plan to compete in lifting events.
DEADLIFT
DEADLIFT SHOES
Flat-soled shoes or minimalist shoes are ideal for deadlifting because they allow a shorter range of motion and stable base. Converse Chuck Taylors or Vans make great budget-friendly choices here.
You don’t need to spend a lot of money, the goal is to get the soles of your feet as close to the platform as possible and minimize soft materials that might introduce unnecessary movement.

There are of course more expensive options with entertaining colors. But keep in mind less is more here.
CHALK
Liquid or block chalk can significantly improve grip strength by absorbing sweat and reducing slippage. It’s a simple yet essential item for any serious powerlifter.
You can get some here
WRIST STRAPS
Not to be confused with wrist wraps which support and stabilize the wrist. Wrist straps increase your grip strength on a bar by counter acting the rotation of a barbell trying to pull out of your fingers as you pull the weight.
A strong grip is important for a strong deadlift, but straps can help overcome grip fatigue during longer training sessions. Keep in mind straps may not be allowed in some completion’s so don’t neglect your grip training. But wrist straps can be an effective training aid.

WEIGHTLIFTING BELT
Similar to squat a sturdy belt can support your lower back and help maintain intra-abdominal pressure during heavy lifts. A belt should never be used as a crutch for poor form but as you get stronger and lift heavier weights you’ll find the time comes where you’ll need a good sturdy belt to start pushing the big boy weights.
A leather belts with a prong or lever buckle provide the best support and adjustability. Brands like Inzer and GymReaper offer excellent options that cater to different preferences in thickness and rigidity.
Belts come in 5mm, 7mm, 10mm, and 13mm thicknesses. Most lifters will find a 7mm or 10mm thick belt to be a good comprise between stiffness and just the right amount of give.

GYM GEAR
DURABLE GYM BAG
A high-quality gym bag should have multiple compartments to organize different types of equipment, be made of durable materials to withstand regular use, and be spacious enough to store all your gear.
Most major brands offer bags designed specifically for athletes.
While it might seem a bit odd that this is on the list you’ll come to appreciate a gym bag when your buddies forget wraps, belts or supplements at home and you have it all together and where you need it. It also makes for an easy grab and go item in the morning or something you can just leave in the car to have handy whenever needed it.
We Recommend
Don’t forget if you have an old duffel or backpack laying around you could always convert it to a Gym bag! I’m always rough on gym bags so try to find something study that can take some abuse.
ORGANIZERS
If you have a big duffel bag with belts, straps and wraps it can be easy for smaller items to get lost or misplaced in your bag. The best solution is to find a gym bag with some exterior pockets like the ones we recommend above.
But if you just have an old school one compartment duffel bag you might consider grabbing a organizer pouch or drawstring bag to put inside. These are handy for putting smaller easy to lose items such as your phone, earbuds, wallet, car keys, and other items you need to quickly grab when you are ready to head out after a tough workout.

HYGIENE KIT
Nobody wants to be that guy who smells like A$$!
Always pack a small hygiene kit containing simple items such as deodorant, a towel, and a spare set of gym clothes. Staying clean and fresh makes the workout more enjoyable for everybody involved.
You might also consider throwing in a clean shirt in case you want to grab a beer with the guys after your workout.
If you plan to shower at the gym make sure to pack a clean towel shampoo, soap, and other supplies you may need.
We aren’t going to make any recommendation’s here, you know what to do. It’s just something that’s often overlooked and you’ll be glad to have what you need.
CONCLUSION
Choosing the right equipment is crucial in powerlifting not only to enhance performance but save time and prevent injuries.
By investing in quality gear and keeping it well-organized, you can focus fully on your training and competition goals.
The best part is most of these items aren’t very expensive and will last for years so get what you need upfront and enjoy your workouts!
